Fernie & Elk Valley Trails Master Plan - Next Steps

Tuesday • July 29, 2025

Tourism Fernie is excited to share an update on the Fernie & Elk Valley Trails Master Plan — an important project shaping the future of our trail network.

Phase 1 is now complete

Working closely with our consultant Ted Morton, and the team at All Mountain Productions and Consulting Inc. we gathered and documented a full trail inventory and developed a comprehensive overview of the current trail system. This phase helped us better understand what we have today and where there are opportunities to improve, connect, and grow.

Phase 1.5 is about to begin

This next phase will focus on engaging with stakeholders and gathering input through:

    • A project summary memo to keep everyone informed
    • Presentations to trail groups, landowners, local governments, and First Nations
    • Surveys tailored to each group to better understand interests, concerns, and ideas

The insights we gain from Phase 1.5 will help us plan and shape Phase 2, which will include deeper engagement activities like focus groups and interviews, leading to a formal Summary of Feedback Report and a Planning Framework Document.

We aim to create a complete inventory of every trail in the area, which will become a shared database showing what types of trails exist, where there are overlaps, and what additional amenities might be needed, such as toilets, warming huts, or signage. By mapping out multi-use trails and identifying gaps, we’ll be better positioned to work together and apply for more funding to improve and expand the trail experience for everyone.

Your input matters - Stay tuned for invitations to presentations and surveys as we move into Phase 1.5.
