Trails

Fernie is situated in the Elk Valley, surrounded by Rocky Mountain Peaks with the Elk River carving a path through the northern side of the community.

A core part of our community are the parks, greenspaces and trails in and around town helping us remain connected with the surrounding natural environment. A trail network offers kilometers of access to residents and visitors alike and surrounding mountains have trails for all ages and abilities to enjoy.

Mount Fernie

• A quick but challenging hike
• Easily accessed from town
• 2-3 hours, An alternative route, 3-4 hours

Mount Procter/Fairy Creek

• Gradual climb
• Through the valley between the Three Sisters reaching the ridge of Procter.
• 6-8 hours

Hosmer Mountain

• Slowly changing into rocky terrain as you reach the first view point.
• This hike offers a unique view of the Valley.
• 3-4 hours

Three Sisters

• The trail begins off of Hartley Lake Road at the trailhead for Heiko’s Trail.
• The opportunity to enjoy the amazing viewpoints offered through the beginning of Heiko’s Trail, including a waterfall, cave and canyon.
• 8 hours

Castle Mountain

• A new addition to Fernie!!!
• Also used for mountain biking.
• 4-6 hours

Lizard Lake

• Accessed via Island Lake’s lower parking lot.
• Gradual climb, great for all levels
• Takes approximately 3 hours round trip

Cabin Ridge Trail

• A popular spot for backcountry enthusiasts.
• Contact the Guide’s Hut in town for more information.
• 4-5 hours

Heiko’s Trail

• A full day excursion, Heiko’s Trail is best done in larger groups starting early in the day.
• The trail is so spectacular as it highlights all of the natural beauty and features found behind and along the mountains.
• 8-10 hours

Elephant Head

• Starts from the Fernie Alpine Resort.
• Hikers can continue on to Polar Peak to extend the trail or head back to the chair.
• 2-3 hours

Polar Peak

• Starts from the Fernie Alpine Resort.
• Leaves you breathless with the 360 degree views!
• 1-2 hours

Ridge Walk

• Starts from the Fernie Alpine Resort.
• One of Fernie Alpine Resort’s most popular hikes.
• 5-6 hours

Old Growth

• Starts from the Island Lake second parking lot
• Astonishing views of the Old Growth Forest
• 1-2 hours

Rail Trail

• Starts from the Island Lake bottom parking lot
• Nice easy walk through cedars
• 30 min.

Lake Trail

• Starts from the Island Lake Lodge
• This quick walk allows you to take in the majestic peaks of the Lizard Range.
• 30 min.

Tamarack

• Starts from the Island Lake Lodge
• Take the time to visit the view point, just a 15 minute walk off course and worth it!
• 4-5 hours

Spineback

• Starts from the Island Lake Lodge.
• A quick and steep trail.
• 1.5-2 hours

Baldy Loop

• Starts from the Island Lake Lodge.
• Great spot for a quick rest.
• 4-5 hours
