The most epic of hikes in Fernie and definitely one activity to add to your “to do” list. Finished in 2003, The Mountain Lakes Trail (or Heiko’s Trail as it's known locally) was built by one of Fernie’s renowned residents, Heiko Socher. The trail is so spectacular as it highlights all of the natural beauty and features found behind and along the mountains that skirt the Elk Valley. A full day excursion, The Mountain Lake Trail is best done in larger groups starting early in the day. The trail can be accessed either through Hartley Lake Road or from Island Lake, although it is recommended to begin at Hartley Lake and finish off the day with a cold drink on the patio at Island Lake Lodge. 8-10 hours
